About
My name is Mell, ceramicist and proud owner of Clay in the Shed.
My creative journey began long before this studio existed. In 2012, I graduated with Honours from the National Art School, where I developed a passion for ceramics and discovered my dream of one day owning a studio where people could come together to learn, create, and connect.
Like many dreams, mine took time. While life led me in different directions, I never let go of my love for teaching. Around seven years ago, I started my first creative business, Hidden Button Workshops, teaching macramé workshops throughout the Hunter Region. It quickly grew into a successful business, allowing me to teach thousands of people while building a wonderful creative community.
In 2021, my family and I made the move from the Central Coast to the Hunter Valley to build our forever home, and with it, my dream studio. What started as an empty shed slowly transformed into the creative space I had imagined for years. Every wall, every bench, and every detail has been thoughtfully built to create a welcoming environment where creativity can flourish.
Today, Clay in the Shed is the next chapter of that journey. It combines my love of ceramics, education, and community into a space where people of all ages and abilities can discover the joy of working with clay.

Whether you're picking up clay for the very first time or returning to a hobby you've always loved, we believe creativity should feel welcoming, not intimidating. Our workshops are designed to be relaxed, hands-on, and supportive, giving you the confidence to explore new skills while enjoying the process.
More than just making pottery, you'll make a lifetime memory. We aim to create meaningful experiences where people can slow down, connect with others, and take pride in creating something with their own hands.

Vision
Our vision is to build a thriving creative community in the Hunter Valley where people can learn, grow, and be inspired through ceramics.
As Clay in the Shed continues to grow, we plan to expand beyond beginner workshops by offering specialised short courses in hand-building, glazing, slip casting, kiln loading, and studio practices. We want to create opportunities for people to deepen their knowledge, develop their skills, and continue their creative journey.
Our goal is for Clay in the Shed to become more than just a pottery studio, it will be a place where friendships are formed, confidence is built, creativity is celebrated, and everyone feels at home.
