Clay in the Shed - Hunter Valley Pottery Short Course
A new 4–6 week hands-on pottery course is coming soon to Clay in the Shed.
Designed for beginners through to intermediate makers, this small-group course will guide you through the essential skills of working with clay in a studio environment. Over several weeks, you’ll build confidence, develop technique, and gain a deeper understanding of the ceramic process from start to finish.
What You’ll Learn
Hand Building Skills
Learn the core techniques of working with clay by hand, including pinching, coiling, and slab building. You’ll explore form, structure, and how to create functional and sculptural pieces without a wheel.
Decoration Techniques
Discover surface design methods to bring your work to life. This includes carving, texture work, underglaze application, and creative finishing techniques to add depth and personality to your pieces.
Kiln Loading & Firing Process
Gain insight into what happens behind the scenes. You’ll learn how pieces are safely loaded into the kiln, the basics of firing cycles, and how raw clay becomes finished ceramic work.
Glaze Making & Application
Explore the fundamentals of glaze chemistry and application. You’ll experiment with colours, finishes, and layering techniques to complete your pieces with a professional finish.
Slip Casting Introduction
An introduction to mould-making and slip casting processes. Learn how liquid clay is used to create repeatable forms and explore the possibilities of production ceramics.
